Due to its civil and military significance, it was operating until very late on. It functioned as a prison-fortress in defence of the West part of the Guadalfeo River mouth. Visiting hours: From 10.30 to 13.45 and from 16.00 to 19.00. It is closed on Mondays.

The Medina population was extended around a fortress, forming three quarters: the Albayzín between the fortress and the Library Tower, the Villa, situated towards the North close to the Castle and the Brocal, to the North of the Villa quarter.
