Ronda is placed amid mountains, on an fantastic site halfway between the provinces of Cdiz and Malaga. Its beautiful town centre is arranged on both sides of the Guadalevn river. Important archaeological sites have been found around this area, with cave paintings that corroborate the presence of prehistoric man in Ronda. From a later period are the megalithic dolmen necropolises of Chopo and Encinas Borrachas.
Under the Romans, Ronda was not as important as the city of Acinipo. With the fall of the Roman Empire, Ronda began to gain importance, especially during the Muslim period, when it was established as a city. After the Reconquest of the Catholic Monarchs, the city started economic and urban-development changes, with the growth of streets and squares. During the 18th century, many monuments, as the New Bridge and the Bullring, were constructed in Ronda. In the 19th century, during the Romantic period, the image of the city is identified with the mountain range, bandits and bullfighting. Nowadays, Ronda is a city of great cultural interest.
