Lying in the heart of the Malaga Mountains is this beautiful village, with two of its hills each having impressive monuments.On one stands the hermitage of La Santsima Virgen de la Candelaria, which was built on this elevated site by some sailors from the Canaries who were miraculously saved from drowning during a storm. The other hills is occupied by the church of Nuestra Seora de la Asuncin.These are two of the treasures of Colmenar; the others are the various types of grape that produce an exquisite wine that travellers can enjoy during the Fiesta del Mosto y la Chacina, accompanied by a delicious broth of carrots and bacon. And since you don't drink wine without bread, in early February the day in honour of the Virgin of La Candelaria and San Blas is observed. Then you will see hundreds of local residents bringing rosquilla pastries, which according to tradition when blessed by the saint will cure throat problems.Later a procession or pilgrimage will be held, with the residents in accompaniment for the approximately seven hour duration, in which a hundred men carry the Virgin and the Saint and perform brief the stops in front of the houses wherein there are ill or disabled persons.
