LAGOS ALGARVE
Lagos was in its origins a fishing village, which its importance grew under the Arabs.
Lagos became the capital of the Algarve from 1576 until 1756.
The city is surrounded by 5th century walls ,inside are the magnificent churches of São Sebastião (Renaissance portals and 17th-18th century tiles), Santa Maria of Misericórida (16th- 19th centuries), Santo António (Baroque) and the very old São João Hermitage (8th-9th centuries).
Other places of interest are the Regional Museum, Governors' Palace, Forte do Pau da Bandeira and the Old Slave Market. And finally its beautiful marina.
Around Lagos you will find the most beautiful beaches of the region such as Praia do Camilo , Praia de Dona Ana and the long 4km beach of Meia in the eastern are of Lagos.But the most popular and attractive site for the tourist visitors is the Ponta da Piedade , a huge rock formation hollowed out by the sea located in the crystal waters of the bay of Lagos.
